1. Activation Problems: Why Your eSIM Won’t Activate

Activation is the first hurdle. If your eSIM isn’t activating, the culprit is often timing, QR code scanning, or carrier settings. Here’s what to check.

Install Before You Travel

Most travel eSIMs require installation while you still have an internet connection. Install the eSIM profile at home, on Wi-Fi, or using your home data. Once abroad, the eSIM activates automatically upon connecting to a local network. If you wait until after arrival, you might need a local Wi-Fi hotspot to download the profile—a classic catch-22.

Scan the QR Code Correctly

When scanning the QR code from your provider, ensure your phone camera is steady and well-lit. If scanning fails, try adding the eSIM manually. Go to Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data > Add Cellular Plan, and enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code provided in your email. Common errors include typo in the activation code—double-check uppercase/lowercase letters and numbers.

Carrier Lock and Compatibility

Your phone must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible. iPhones from XS onward (except some Chinese models) support eSIM. For Android, check your model on the manufacturer’s list. If your phone is carrier-locked, the eSIM won’t activate. Contact your home carrier to unlock it before traveling.

Roaming and Regional Restrictions

Some eSIMs are region-specific. A “Global” eSIM may not cover every country—check the provider’s coverage list. Also, ensure data roaming is enabled on your phone for the eSIM line. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Enable Data Roaming.
